Nokia 3110 Evolve – A Green Phone Released |
Nokia outlined its long heritage in addressing environmental issues and commitment to driving new initiatives in the mobile industry in areas such as energy efficiency, materials used in products, take back, recycling, and packaging. This was against the background of the launch of the Nokia 3110 Evolve, a mobile device with bio-covers made from more than 50% renewable material. The device is presented in a small package made of 60% recycled content and it comes with Nokia's most energy efficient charger yet, using 94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements.
The Nokia 3110 Evolve is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives from the company. For example, Nokia was the first manufacturer to put alerts into its devices to encourage people to unplug their chargers. The power that could be saved globally by all Nokia phone users unplugging their chargers when no longer needed is equivalent to enough energy to power 100,000 average-size European homes.
In February 2006, Nokia also introduced new compact packaging that reduced materials used by 54%, a move which by the end of this year will have resulted in 5,000 fewer trucks needed to distribute products, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and savings of EUR 100 million. |

Flock |
Flock enjoyed 15 minutes of fame as one of Silican Valley’s most talked about start-ups when it first showed an early version of its “Social browser”- a web browser designed to incorporate instant messaging and blogs to help track friends easier. Like many other consumer internet companies, Flock is in the race to attract “eyeballs”, in its case, against well known and established brands such as Microsoft’s internet Explorer, Apple’s Safari and the open-source Firefox browser. Since it has been finally released late last year Flock has been downloaded 4m times, barely scratching the surface of its potential audience. However Flock claims to have alighted on a proven business model. The Yahoo search engine is set as the default on the browser and Flock gets a share of the advertising Yahoo makes from searches. The same business on a bigger scale helped Mozilla, the non-profit organization behind the Firefox browser, generate $60m in 2006. |

Supply the information: It can prove to be surprisingly hard to get all the collateral information needed to build an effective website from a client. What you may assume to be irrelevant can be highly useful to your agency. Old brochures, instruction manuals, power point presentations have a wealth of information that any agency would welcome. |
| |
Consistency: When creating an online presence it is extremely important to check whether the website is consistent with your other marketing material. It can be very useful for your company to keep an information file on your company colours, fonts and current marketing material in order to keep the brand on track. |
| |
Brand Architecture: To really kick start your marketing it is worth creating a brand architecture document. This brief document tells anyone who needs to know about your brand exactly its position in the market place and where it aspires to. It need not be more than three pages long, but is utterly invaluable when having to brief a marketing, design or advertising agency on your product. |

miShare |
One of the biggest problems that people have with iPods is that unless you have a diploma in hacking, it is extremely difficult to share your tunes, especially without getting a computer involved. That is of course until now. Want the latest album from your friends' iPod? Simply connect both iPods to the miShare unit, press the button and away you go. It's kind of like swapping football cards in the playground, although much cooler.
Providing that your files are not DRM protected (that's digital rights management to you technophobes), everything from movies to photos to songs can be transferred. Even entire playlists. Nice. There is however one downside – for now the unit does not work with the iPhone or iPod touch, although we are told that a firmware update is being looked in to. |

Lightning Guns To Help Fight The War On Terrorism.
A company called Applied Energetics is developing lightning guns capable of stalling cars and shorting IEDs from a safe distance. They were originally planning on using them on people, but have since moved to cars and bombs after an unsuccessful attempt at rounding up test subjects (bums). The weapon is expected to be ready within 5-6 years and I'll definitely be adding one to my anti-robot arsenal. |
